The history of the Iranian Genetics Society

The Iranian Genetics Society was established in 1966 through the efforts of a group of Iranian experts and scholars in genetics. Initially, the society was divided into four groups, and its national conferences were held concurrently with the annual congresses for children:
  • Science Group
  • Medical Group
  • Agricultural Group
  • Veterinary Group
After that, the organization of congress conferences continued independently. From 1968 to 1978, seven independent scientific congresses of the society were held in cities such as Tehran, Mashhad, Tabriz, Isfahan, Shiraz, and Ahvaz. After the victory of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Revolution, especially during the conflicts of the war, the society's activities were suspended for two decades, and until 1999, it had no specific activities. In 1999, a renewed movement took shape in the continuation of organizational activities of genetic science professionals. With the preparation of a charter and its registration in 2000, the society returned to the field of action again. According to the new charter, the board of directors of this society consists of two experts in human genetics, two specialists in animal genetics, three specialists in plant genetics, one in prokaryotic genetics, and one in stem cells. The diversity of disciplines in the board of directors and other organs of the Iranian Genetics Society, along with the addition of new sections, actually ensures a comprehensive and all-encompassing perspective on various aspects of the science of genetics.
Current branches of the Iranian Genetics Society include:
  • Plant Genetics Branch
  • Human Genetics (Medical) Branch
  • Animal Genetics Branch
  • Prokaryotic Genetics Branch
  • Stem Cells Branch (since 2013)
  • Genetic Resources Branch (since 2013)
  • Student and Educational Branch (since 2014)
The Iranian Genetics Society has implemented various projects and congresses since its establishment, leading to the promotion, development, and utilization of the science of genetics in the community. Some of the implemented or ongoing projects and programs of the society in previous years include:
  • Futuristic Research Project on the Status of Agriculture and Natural Resources Considering Global Changes and the Trend of Technological Growth.
  • Implementation of the Genetic Science Accreditation Project on the international level commissioned by the Deputy of Science and Technology.
  • Participation in drafting the law on genetic resources and reserves, along with its executive regulations.
  • Collaboration in outsourcing affairs with the Research, Infrastructure, and Development Group of the Biotechnology Development Headquarters.
  • Collaboration in preparing the standard document for cytogenetics by the Standardization Committee of the Iranian Genetics Society (Human Genetics Branch).
  • Implementation of the genetic identification project for the anonymous martyrs and the identification of missing persons from the imposed war and the children affected by the Halabja chemical disaster.
